Buyer's guide

What affects the cost of a skydive?

Five things that move the price — and how to use each one to your advantage.

01

Jump altitude

The single biggest variable. A 10,000ft jump gives roughly 30 seconds of freefall; 15,000ft gives around 60 seconds and costs £30–£60 more. Most beginners won't notice the difference — the first 10 seconds are sensory overload regardless. If budget is a concern, 10,000ft is perfectly good.

02

Location

London-area and South East dropzones charge a premium — expect to pay £20–£40 more than equivalent jumps in the North or Scotland. Regional dropzones have lower overheads and pass those savings on. The quality is comparable; the scenery is different.

03

Weekday vs weekend

Many dropzones charge more on weekends and bank holidays. If you have flexibility, booking midweek can save £10–£30. Midweek slots are also less overbooked, which usually means shorter wait times on the day.

04

Video packages

Video adds £60–£130 to the cost. Most use a handcam on the instructor's wrist for POV footage. Some dropzones offer an outside cameraman — a separate skydiver who jumps with you — for better angles, but this costs significantly more and must be booked in advance.

05

Charity jumps

Charity-organised jumps often advertise a low upfront fee but require you to raise a minimum sponsorship amount — usually £300–£500. If you're confident you'll hit that target, it can work out cheaper. If not, a pay-your-own jump is the better value option.

FAQs

Skydiving in the UK — common questions

How old do you have to be to skydive in the UK?
You must be at least 16 years old to do a tandem skydive in the UK. Jumpers aged 16 or 17 require written parental consent on the day. There is no upper age limit set by British Skydiving, though individual dropzones may request a doctor's note for jumpers over 60.
Is there a weight limit for skydiving in the UK?
Most UK dropzones set a maximum weight limit of 15 stone (95kg) for tandem skydiving, with some accepting up to 16 stone (102kg) with a surcharge. Weight limits exist for safety reasons related to parachute load ratings. Always check with your specific dropzone before booking.
What is the cheapest way to skydive in the UK?
Book a weekday jump at a regional dropzone in the North of England or Scotland, at 10,000ft rather than 15,000ft, without a video package. This combination can bring the total cost down to £130–£150 versus £250+ for a premium weekend jump near London with video.
How much does it cost to learn to skydive (AFF) in the UK?
An Accelerated Freefall (AFF) course — the standard route to a solo skydiving licence in the UK — costs between £1,200 and £1,800 for the full Level 1–8 progression. After qualifying, individual jump tickets typically cost £20–£35. The British Skydiving A licence requires a minimum of 16 jumps and a skills test.
Do I need insurance to skydive in the UK?
Basic third-party liability insurance is typically included in the jump price at British Skydiving member dropzones. Personal accident cover is not usually included and should be arranged separately. Some travel insurance policies exclude skydiving — check your policy before booking.
How long does a tandem skydive take on the day?
Allow a full day. Most dropzones ask you to arrive 1–2 hours before your slot for a briefing. The aircraft ride takes 15–20 minutes. Freefall lasts 30–60 seconds depending on altitude. The parachute descent takes around 5 minutes. Weather delays are common in the UK — it's not unusual for your jump to be delayed several hours or rescheduled entirely.
